How to report stolen content to YouTube

Whether you're the creator whose content was stolen, or a supporter who wants to help — here's exactly what you can do and how to do it.

Important: Only the original creator can file a formal copyright (DMCA) takedown. Supporters play a valuable but different role — this guide covers both clearly.

As the original creator, you hold the copyright to your content — giving you the most powerful legal tool to get stolen videos removed. A formal DMCA notice forces YouTube to act, and repeated strikes result in the offending channel being terminated.

    Step-by-step: copyright takedown request

    1

Automatic 48-hour removal notice (before a strike)

When SeekMyContent finds a stolen video, we automatically email the theft channel asking them to remove it within 48 hours — and let you know once it's sent. Many channels take the video down on their own, saving you the formal process. If they ignore it, you still keep every right to file a copyright strike.

Only sent when a public contact email is found for that channel. No email found? Skip straight to step 2.
    2

    Gather your evidence

Before filing, collect: the URL of the stolen video, the URL of your original video, and the approximate date you first published it. Screenshots help but aren't required.

Your SeekMyContent DMCA report (in Blacklist Monitor) already has all stolen URLs ready to copy, grouped per channel.
    3

Go to YouTube's copyright removal tool

Visit youtube.com/copyright_complaint_form. Sign in with your Google account. Select "I want to submit a copyright infringement notification".

    Open YouTube's copyright form
    4

Fill in the webform (takes ~5 minutes)

You'll need to: describe your original content, paste the stolen video URLs — you can submit multiple at once — and provide your name and contact email. YouTube accepts up to 1,000 URLs per submission.

Batch all stolen videos in one submission to save time.
    5

Submit and wait for YouTube to act

YouTube typically reviews and removes confirmed infringing content within a few days. You'll get an email confirmation. The channel that stole your content also receives a copyright strike.

    6

    Monitor for re-uploads

Repeat offenders often re-upload to new channels. SeekMyContent continues monitoring so you'll be alerted if your content surfaces again.

3 copyright strikes = permanent channel termination. YouTube enforces this automatically.

Alternative: report directly from the video

Use the "..." menu on any stolen video

On any YouTube video, click the three-dot menu → "Report" → "Infringes my rights" → "Copyright". This is quicker but less powerful — it flags the video for manual review rather than filing a formal DMCA notice. Best used alongside a formal submission, not instead of it.

    What happens after you submit

First 48 hours: If a public email was found, the theft channel has 48 hours to remove the video after our automatic notice. If it's still up, file your copyright request.
Within hours: YouTube sends you an email confirming receipt of your request.
Within days: Confirmed infringing videos are removed and the channel receives a copyright strike.
After 3 strikes: The channel is permanently terminated. YouTube enforces this automatically.
Ongoing: SeekMyContent continues monitoring so you're alerted if content is re-uploaded to new channels. For blacklisted channels you reported to Youtube, when they are taken down, this is automatically tracked and logged in your account.
